Information for Taxpayers

What is VITA?
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $58,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

What you need to bring with you to have your taxes prepared
(Check out the PDF list of documents needed for a VITA/TCE preparer to file your taxes)​
  • Social Security Cards for all family members on the tax return. Please do not 'just bring the numbers'; OR Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) for all family members/dependents 
  • A valid picture identification (like a drivers license or state-issued ID) for taxpayer and spouse
  • IRS CP01A Notice for taxpayers who have an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
  • Both spouses MUST be present to sign return if filing a joint return
  • All W-2s and 1099s (if any) for current year; this includes SSA 1099 for Social Security Benefits and SSA letter for SSI benefits
  • All 1099s from stocks/interest and dividends, gambling winnings, or any other income not included above
  • Form 1095A: Affordable Care Act health care documentation
  • Form 1098T, and the college’s statement of account showing tuition paid during tax filing year, if claiming an Education Tax Credit
  • Statement from landlord (with its address & phone) of rent paid during tax filing year or paid real estate tax bill if filing for Missouri Property Tax Credit (Also known as: Circuit Breaker, MO-PTC, or Rent Rebate)
  • Proof of childcare expenses paid including the Name, Address and Tax ID number of the provider
  • If using direct deposit, a copy of your check for bank account to which refund(s) will be direct deposited
  • Copy of previous filing year tax return if possible

When possible, your returns will be filed electronically with both the IRS and the State(s). We strongly recommend any refund be electronically deposited into your bank  account to prevent theft or loss.

What is TCE?
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Where's My Federal Refund?

To find out the status of your federal refund, you will need the primary tax flier's SSN, the filing status on your return (i.e. Single, Married filing Jointly, Head of Household), the EXACT dollar amount you are to be refunded and the tax year in question. Once you know all that information, click the link below:
